Birnam Arts is delighted to offer artists based in Scotland the opportunity to apply for the next ‘Studio Access Residency’.
The February – March 2022 residency offers:
We are particularly interested in proposals that consider ecological, societal, process-based or community-based ideas, but wider concepts will also be considered.
Our studios are shared creative spaces. We host a variety of workshops and classes throughout the year and some of these will be taking place at the time of the residency. We ask that you indicate your preferred days and times of access within the application, and we will do our best to accommodate this. It will be possible to leave elements of your work in progress and materials within the space, however, we do ask that you are mindful of other studio users.
We appreciate there are many forms of arts practice and flexibility in types of space are useful. Please indicate within your proposal which space would suit your practice.
This studio features a wall-mounted dance mirror, wooden floor, high ceiling, and an abundance of natural light from the large east facing windows. Use of this studio would best suit a performance artist, dancer or a visual artist requiring a clean working area.
This studio features two large tables, a clean-working station, sink, wooden floors, and a long bench beside the large west-facing windows.
Use of this studio would best suit visual artists looking to work in a variety of mediums that benefit from sink access. Arts practices suitable include, but are not limited to; ceramics, sculpture, painting, printmaking, silversmithing, bookbinding/zine making, textiles and more.
As part of access to this studio, 2 Kiln firings and area for storage of work will be included with the residency. If more firings are required, this can be accommodated but please note that covering the cost of any extra consumables and the technician fee will fall to the artist.
The £500 artist fee is a fund available for either studio space. The artist fee will be paid to the successful artist upon receipt of an invoice. Please ensure you have a UK bank account and registered address.
Applications in partnership are also welcome. e.g., two artists who would like to develop a piece of work together. The artist fee remains the same for the project and this should be taken into consideration.
We welcome applications from all Scotland-based artists, regardless of background. We are particularly interested in applications from people of black, ethnic and minority backgrounds, to those living with disabilities, and people of any gender and non-binary. We also support artists of any age, including parents who have taken a break from their practice due to family commitments.
Please be mindful that Birnam Arts is an open, fair, and creative venue for the community, as well as the arts. As such, proposals depicting overly graphic or overtly gratuitous sexual or violent references will not be considered.
Please note that we will adhere to ongoing covid guidance and restrictions and will adhere to any level systems reinitiated. For more information, please head to https://www.gov.scot/coronavirus-covid-19/
If you would like to include images with your application, please submit photos that are well lit, clear, and easy to download, for example, .jpg, or .png files that are between 500kb and 3Mb would be best.
Due to the volume of applications we receive, we regret that we are unable to provide feedback and would encourage you to ask a trusted person to read through your application before submitting.
All submissions should be sent to kate@birnamarts.com by 5pm on 5th January 2022. Please note that late submissions will not be accepted.
