Visiting Birnam Arts

How do I get to Birnam Arts by public transport?

The Birnam & Dunkeld Station is a 5-minute walk to Birnam Arts. You can catch a Scotrail service from Perth to Birnam & Dunkeld Train Station in 20 minutes. From the station, you’ll walk down the stairs beside the A9, under the bridge, and up the stairs on the other side at the top of Station Road, where Birnam Arts is.

What is there to do at Birnam Arts?

Birnam Arts offers a lot of fun for the whole family. From our Beatrix Potter exhibition and the Beatrix Potter Garden, attend a workshop or class, stroll through our Gallery and enjoy our latest Exhibition, enjoy a coffee, house-baked treat or lunch. With our beautiful terrace and indoor cafe, we know you'll enjoy time relaxing with family and friends or a little break for yourself.

Is there free parking at Birnam Arts?

Yes, there is free street parking outside Birnam Arts, but it is limited. We recommend considering this if you are attending a show in our Auditorium. Usually, the doors and Café Bar will open an hour before show time, allowing you to arrive and relax in our beautiful foyer before taking your seat in the Auditorium.

Parking at Birnam Arts

Do I need to pre-book tickets for events and exhibitions or can I turn up?

We recommend pre booking your tickets to save from any disappointment where an event, workshop or exhibtion has a maximum capacity. However you are welcome to purchase your tickets for theatre shows, beatrix Potter entry or to watch live music at our box office on arrival.

Is there a coffee shop at Birnam Arts or Dunkeld?

Our Café offers a range of hot and cold drinks with freshly baked cakes, pastries and treats. We also take dietary restrictions seriously, and regularly have vegan and gluten free options available. If you aren't sure, check out the menu for the icons, or ask our friendly staff.

Café

Can I bring a dog?

Birnam Arts is happy to welcome canine family to our building. We have water bowls available outside for them. However, we ask that only service dogs accompany you into a ticketed event inside the Auditorium.

Visiting Beatrix Potter Exhibition

Do I need a ticket to visit Beatrix Potter?

You will need to have a ticket to visit our Beatrix Potter exhibition, which you can pre-book online or purchase on the day in our Gift Shop. Online tickets allow you to choose a date to visit, although they are valid for 12 months from date of purchase, if your plans change.

We have day tickets for adults, children, or family groups of 2 adults + up to 4 accompanying children (3-15 years). Children under 3 are free.

How long does it take to visit the Beatrix Potter Exhibition?

We recommend at least 30 minutes to an hour to visit. However, families with young children may want to leave more time to be able enjoy the play activities.

What activities are there for children in the Beatrix Potter Exhibition?

Children can enjoy a range of activities including dressing up as their favourite Beatrix Potter character, enjoy reading a selection of storybooks, playing with traditional wooden toys, stepping back in time to explore the 'Victorian School Classroom' with traditional blackboards and our role play 'Village Shop'.

'Activity Boxes' are also available which have a range of colouring and puzzle sheets along with pencils and crayons to use during your visit. There's plenty to keep the wee ones busy!

How do I arrange a group booking or school visit to the Beatrix Potter Exhibition?

We are more than happy to welcome groups or school visits to our Beatrix Potter Exhibition. Please contact our Shop Manager, Rachael, via rachael@birnamarts.com to discuss your requirements.

Exhibiting at Birnam Arts

What is an Artist in Residence? How do I become one?

The Artist in Residence programme has been in Pilot testing for the past two years, as we consider how we’d like to offer it.  We have offered a Studio Access Residency to artists based in Scotland the opportunity to have access to our Studios for a set period of time. In 2022, we invited artists with a focus on ecological, societal, process-based or community-based ideas to apply.

We do a call for applications periodically through the year, with applications information on our website and promoted through our social media channels and with our creative partners. We welcome applications that meet the criteria listed.

Birnam Arts is currently restructuring the application process for use of our exhibition space. We are always interested to hear from artists wishing to propose an exhibition of their work. Email us at visualarts@birnamarts.com
