Artist in Residence 2024 AIR

Autumn Studio-Access Artist Residency 2026

With thanks to further funding from Creative Scotland, we are delighted to offer our Studio-Access Artist Residency for Autumn 2026

Autumn 2026 Artist-in-Residence Opportunity

The Autumn 2026 Artist-in-Residence opportunity provides dedicated time, space and support for an artist or maker to reconnect with and develop their creative practice. The residency includes an artist fee of £575, 10 studio sessions, access to the Visual Arts and/or Dance & Drama Studios, and three mentoring sessions.

Dates between: 1st September - 30 November

The residency is designed to offer flexibility, including morning, afternoon, evening and weekend access, recognising the challenges of balancing artistic practice with paid work and/or family and caring responsibilities. It is particularly suited to an artist or maker looking to re-establish a regular creative routine, develop new work, or regain focus following a break from their practice.

There is no expectation to exhibit or publicly share work as part of the residency, although there may be an opportunity to deliver an Artist Talk for an additional fee, where appropriate.

The programme welcomes applications from artists from a diverse range of backgrounds and actively encourages applications from underrepresented artists, including those from minority ethnic backgrounds, LGBTQIA+ artists, disabled and neurodivergent artists, artists with caring responsibilities, and artists living and working in areas of multi-deprivation. Applications exploring environmental and climate change issues are also welcomed.

As part of the programme’s development and to support future funding, the successful artist or maker will be asked to provide feedback on their experience of the residency.

ELIGIBILITY

You must be a Scotland based (of any nationality) or Scottish artist working in the visual and/or applied arts sector.

Given this is not a residential opportunity and Birnam Arts is looking to support an artist or maker to dedicate routine access to the studio and practice development, applications from Perthshire based artists will be prioritised. However, if you are able to demonstrate clearly how you would intend to access the space through sourcing local accommodation, we would welcome your application.

Please email Kali for the application form, visualarts@birnamarts.com

Deadline is midnight on Friday 31st August 2026.

Incomplete or late applications will not be considered

Birnam Arts has made such a difference to Birnam since its redevelopment 20 years ago, and attracts an incredible variety of high-quality arts performers. It's also a great Community space. We're very happy to make a contribution to such an asset.

The Birnam Book Festival Committee were so pleased with how the new facilities in the Auditorium added to an extremely professionally presented event. The lighting allowed us to create staging to match the country’s leading book festival events, such as we’ve seen in Edinburgh.
