In this documentary, presented in collaboration with Havana Glasgow Film Festival, Laura Rivalta takes viewers on a journey through Havana to hear from beekeepers and farmers about Cuba’s unique beekeeping practices.
Emma Shannon, a researcher on Cuban apiculture based at the University of Glasgow, compares the Cuban experience with the challenges faced by bees and beekeepers in Scotland. Through the exploration of Cuba’s beekeeping traditions, the short film sheds light on the island’s sustainable apiculture.
Economic limitations and restricted access to chemical fertilisers and pesticides since the 1990s have catalysed a shift to agroecology and organic farming nationally. Honey production on the island is predominantly organic and primarily derived from wildflowers, giving it a distinctive flavour. The Cuban government has taken measures to safeguard and promote beekeeping as a vital component of sustainable agriculture.
Followed by a discussion with the film directors Dani Acosta and Hugo Rivalta.

We had not planned to present a hybrid festival, however that changed when one of our main authors tested positive for Covid. I greatly appreciated how the team worked with us to pivot and present remotely in part, making full use of your enhanced video conferencing equipment. As a result, we were able to deliver quite complex events with several elements all showing on screen simultaneously. The audio-visual quality was excellent, and our audiences were delighted that these events could still go ahead, in spite of Covid. The author in question was really pleased that he could join us on screen and remarked that he had not been so well supported in this way at any other festival.

The comfortable and aesthetically pleasing cafe seating attracted praise and provided ideal places for small groups to gather at the tables, enjoying excellent food and drinks! Visitors remarked upon your new signage, now so much easier to navigate to the various rooms within the venue.
