Organic Drawing with Marcus Oakley

Organic Drawing is a playful, experimental drawing workshop focused on the process rather than creating the “perfect” drawing.

The workshop offers a holistic and welcoming space where mistakes are embraced as part of the creative process. Participants are encouraged to let go of expectations, get lost in the line and explore mark-making, discovering their own unique drawing language.

Through abstract and improvised drawing, participants can explore mood, rhythm and melody, working intuitively from their imagination. There is no right or wrong way to draw — the aim is to play, experiment, and see where the drawing takes you.

The workshop could be open to all ages, creating a space where people of different ages and experience levels can explore drawing together.

Marcus Oakley is an illustrator and artist originally from Norfolk and now based in Dunfermline. His playful work explores the possibilities of lines, drawing inspiration from the natural and man-made, the contemporary and the retrospective.

Marcus is fascinated by the rhythm and personality of a line and how it can evolve into characters, landscapes and imagined worlds. His influences include music, the countryside, architecture and design, everyday rituals and the joy of making stuff.

With over two decades of experience across books, editorial, textile design and packaging, Marcus’s practice sits at the intersection of art and design, with a continuing curiosity about how the two disciplines can inform, challenge and complement one another.

He has also lectured in illustration and, for the past ten years, worked with Artlink Edinburgh and Lothians as a workshop facilitator, encouraging creativity through drawing, making and playful experimentation.
