POWER STATION (Credit: Simon Aldridge)

Power Station

Part of Birnam & Dunkeld Film Society 26/27

30 August 2026

On Sunday 30th August at 7pm, Dunkeld and Birnam Community Energy Group and Birnam & Dunkeld Film Society present a free pre-season screening of POWER STATION - an inspirational film about local people taking control of their energy future.

POWER STATION began in the depths of lockdown with the question "what could we do from where we live, with the people around us, to build power - of energy and imagination?"

It's is a scalable in-your-face prototype of community led power. The film charts the financial and emotional trials and tribulations of making change together.  From sleeping on rooftops to growing thousands of sunflowers and attempts at Christmas number one, community spirit and resilience are at the heart of this.

Come along and enjoy - and find out how you can get involved in community energy, as the Dunkeld and Birnam Community Energy Group gears up to deliver a programme of community engagement to create more community-led local energy projects and initiatives. It's also a great chance to find out more about Birnam & Dunkeld Film Society and sign up for their 2026/27 programme of screenings.

This film is rated 12A. Under-12s are welcome along, but please make sure they're with an adult who can decide if it's right for them.

Synopsis

Two artists in Walthamstow set out to take their street off the grid, kickstarting a solar-powered energy revolution.

Inspired by lockdown mutual aid initiatives, artist-activists Hilary Powell and Dan Edelstyn decided to turn their street into an energy-generating powerhouse – a prototype for a new way of living, with the hope of galvanising a wider push towards sustainable alternatives.

Directed by the duo, POWER STATION charts their turbulent journey, from pitching the idea to their neighbours and sleeping on the roof of their home, to raising finance and launching a bid for a Christmas number one single.

By turns funny and heartwarming, Powell and Edelstyn’s film is a vibrant portrait of their local neighbourhood, and a charming testament to the power of art in changing minds about what could be possible.

We had not planned to present a hybrid festival, however that changed when one of our main authors tested positive for Covid. I greatly appreciated how the team worked with us to pivot and present remotely in part, making full use of your enhanced video conferencing equipment. As a result, we were able to deliver quite complex events with several elements all showing on screen simultaneously. The audio-visual quality was excellent, and our audiences were delighted that these events could still go ahead, in spite of Covid. The author in question was really pleased that he could join us on screen and remarked that he had not been so well supported in this way at any other festival.

This is a lovely light and welcoming building with a cafe and library during the day and some really excellent concerts and shows of all genres mostly in the evening. It's an intimate space but with capacity for several hundred people and tends to be competitively priced. It relies on volunteer support and is an excellent community hub.
