Dance Workshop

Scottish Dance Workshop

15 October 2024

Whatever your age or level of experience, come enjoy all or part of a fun and interesting workshop connecting the common movements of various forms of Scottish dance. Choose your ticket price, as Laura Scott has volunteered this class as a benefit for Birnam Arts.

Laura is in a unique position to present this workshop, having taught all levels of dance, from age 6 to 76, and having herself performed and choreographed Highland, Cape Breton step, Highland folk and Scottish social dances well into her 60s. Few realise how connected are the movements of these various forms despite their different styles.

Laura grew up near Boston in the USA, where she not only learned Highland from a legendary Scottish teacher but also worked closely with the Cape Breton community and gave others a chance to watch and learn the intricacies and fun movements of the dance.

Although she served as an official judge of Highland dance for 30 years, Laura has consistently explored the artistry of how closely Scottish dance, in all its forms, expresses its music. This class will enjoy Iive fiddling to match the warmups and dances, played by her husband Ed, who this year was inducted into the Scots Trad Music Hall of Fame for his services to the Scottish music community.
