The Tannahill Weavers

The Tannahill Weavers

2 September 2026

Now in their 58th year, the Tannahill Weavers are Scotland's premier traditional band — trailblazers who were the first professional Scottish folk group to bring full Highland bagpipes to the stage, and inductees into the Scottish Traditional Music Hall of Fame. Formed from a Paisley pub session in 1968, they've spent five decades fusing fire-driven instrumentals, topical songs and original ballads with the drive of modern rhythm, earning them the New York Times' verdict as "an especially eloquent mixture of the old and the new."

There's a local thread too: a vintage Tannahill Weavers poster still hangs just down the road in the Taybank, a nod to the band's history with Dougie MacLean, who played with the Tannahills in the mid-1970s before going on to write "Caledonia."

Expect driving guitar, ethereal flute, soaring pipes and rich vocal harmony from a band Glasgow Celtic Connections called "seminal trailblazers... now also national treasures."

We really enjoy visiting the Arts Centre when we are walking in the Birnam area, and our family loved the Puppet show at Christmas.
