In his first major UK solo exhibition, working with drawings, sculptural and video installation, internationally acclaimed artist Yunior Aguiar Perdomo will present a body of work investigating aspects of a migrant’s experience of living in Perthshire. Exploring the rituals and routines of how people stay connected to their heritage and culture of origin, Yunior invites us to consider the tensions, absurdities, rewards and losses that emerge from the transformative process of change and navigating life in a new land.
Originally from Havanna, Cuba, Yunior is a contemporary artist and educator, now based in Scotland. Within his work he is interested in cultural processes of integration and assimilation. His work focuses on material culture in relation to memory, displacement, identity and history. His practice is research and process led, using material methods, found objects and contemporary art resources as tools for analysis. Yunior’s work transits across media, including moving image/time based, drawing, printmaking and installation. It incorporates elements of seriality, found objects and text, both as a vehicle for content and a symbolic tool.
Yunior is also one half of the collective Celia-Yunior and his work as part of this creative duo has been exhibited across the world in different events such as solo and group exhibitions, major biennales and film festivals. Their works have been included in key publications focused on contemporary Cuban and Latin[1]American art and culture, as well as being part of collections in the Americas and Europe.
