Through her paintings and drawings Jos Mahon shares with us her journey of nearly 1400 miles between Land's End and John o' Groats. Recording the changing landscape and weather as she headed north from the dramatic South West coast of England through to the rugged Scottish Highlands, this body of work showcases how Mahon’s creative practice is intertwined with her passion for and relationship with the landscape she encounters. Mahon describes walking and painting in wild and remote places as being ‘as natural as breathing’ and through her acts of mark making and visual journalling, she takes us with her amidst this great adventure. With her we experience the rise and fall of the path, the constant movement of the sea, the misty mornings and stunning sunsets. We watch the country change as she walks north and feel her rising excitement at the approach of the wildness and drama of the Highlands. We experience remote camping places beside rushing rivers and among towering mountains, sensing her elation as finally, the end is in sight – ‘the sea, the sea!’.
Jos Mahon originally trained as a sculptor gaining a BA Hons in Fine Art in 1974 and a Master’s Degree in Fine Art in 1976 from Newcastle University Mahon was awarded the Boise Travelling Scholarship (used to visit West coast of Ireland and the Isle of Arran) in 1976. In the following years Mahon exhibited large scale landscape inspired sculpture in many group and solo shows across the North of England, including Grizedale Forest, Cumbria, and within London.
During the following years Mohon turned to painting, still looking to the rugged landscape as her source of inspiration. Frequent expeditions to Scotland's remote islands, including St Kilda and Shetland's Northern Isles, gave rise to a passionate and powerful body of coast based work, while trekking expeditions in Nepal, Greenland and New Zealand inspired a dramatic series of mountain drawings and paintings.
Recent projects continue to combine Mahon’s passion for walking and working outdoors; responding to land, sea and sky.
Mahon has published two books about her 4 month trek of nearly 1400 miles she made across the UK from Land's End to John o' Groats with her husband and their our faithful canine companion Barney. The first, Barney's Long Walk, is based on Mahon’s diary and follows her journey north. The book includes many colour photographs of the landscape she experienced along with a selection of the paintings from her second book. The second, Painting on the End to End Trail, contains 134 paintings selected from a total of over 280 made during the trek.
