Artist Rowan Lear leads a playful and experimental workshop in embodied photography.
Together, we will explore the woodland around Birnam and Dunkeld with cameras, taking inspiration from the multi-sensory world of plants, before steeping and making plant-based photographic developer and processing their films.
Rowan Lear is an artist and writer, based in Glasgow. Rowan has exhibited in group and solo shows across the UK, Ireland and the USA, most recently a sudden branching at Birnam Arts in 2021.
In 2018, Rowan initiated Planetary Processing, a gathering of artists speculating on materiality and ecology, at The Photographer’s Gallery, London.
Since 2019, Rowan has been a seed librarian at Glasgow Seed Library, Centre for Contemporary Arts, cultivating and caring for a living repository of seeds and stories.

Cost: Sliding Scale £10 / £20 / £30*
Tier 1 @ £10 | I frequently stress about meeting basic* needs and don’t always achieve them. I sometimes can’t afford public or private transport. If I own a car/have access to a car, I am not always able to afford petrol. I have no or very limited expendable** income.
Tier 2 @ £20 | I may stress about meeting my basic* needs but still regularly achieve them. I can afford public transport and often private transport. If I have a car/access to a car I can afford petrol. I have some expendable income.
Tier 3 @ £30 | I am comfortably able to meet all of my basic needs. I can afford public and private transport. If I have a car/access to a car I can afford petrol. I have an expendable income.
*BASIC NEEDS include food, housing, clothing, and transportation.
**EXPENDABLE INCOME might mean you are able to buy coffee or tea at a shop, go to the cinema or a concert, buy new clothes, books and similar items each month, etc.
There are limited spaces available, and the class size has been reduced to allow maximum safety in line with Covid-19 restrictions.
NOTE: Actual cost per person, per session is £80. This class has been subsidised by Birnam Arts and Creative Scotland.
Please wear sturdy outdoor footwear and warm layers.
Automatic cameras and one roll of black and white film will be supplied.
