BBF Patrons & Committee

Birnam Book Festival is run by volunteers, for the benefit of the community and book lovers everywhere.

A small committee of enthusiastic people from our local community, supported and encouraged by our Patrons, provide time throughout the year on a voluntary basis to organise and manage the festival.

Fiona Valpy

An acclaimed Number 1 bestselling Kindle author, Fiona Valpy’s books have been translated into a dozen languages worldwide.

Fiona spent seven years living in France, having moved there from the UK in 2007. Her love for the country, its people and their history has found its way into the books she’s written. She draws inspiration from the stories of strong women, especially during the years of the Second World War, and her meticulous historical research enriches her writing with an evocative sense of time and place.

James Jauncey

For many years Jamie Jauncey sat on the board of the Edinburgh International Book Festival, the world’s largest celebration of the written word, where he has chaired many literary events.

Writing as James Jauncey, he has published a number of novels for adults and children and he has been chairman of the Society Of Authors in Scotland.

In addition, Jamie is one of three partners in the Dark Angels programme of residential Creative Writing in Business courses. He’s been a director of 26, the national writers’ organisation which champions a better use of language at work, and writes two blogs about language and life at A Few Kind Words and Don Roberto and Me.

Magnus Linklater

Magnus Linklater CBE is the author of several books on current affairs and Scottish history, is a commentator, columnist, and former Scotland editor of the Times.

Magnus was editor of the Scotsman from January 1988 until July 1994. He was educated at Belhaven Hill School, Dunbar, and Eton College and went to Trinity Hall, Cambridge, before taking up a career in journalism, working on the Daily Express, the Evening Standard, and The Sunday Times, before moving to The Observer, where he became managing editor (news). He was appointed editor of the London Daily News in 1986, then moved to The Scotsman, which he edited for six and a half years, before joining The Times.

Pop in to the Foyer Cafe for breakfast, grab a delicious coffee with a selection of our homemade baking or enjoy a light lunch whilst browsing on the free WiFi. Wander upstairs to view the latest of our monthly art exhibitions before visiting the world of Beatrix Potter, or the Gift Shop to purchase a special gift for your loved ones or yourself!

    Star Star Star Star Star

I have enjoyed taking part in events such as Scots Opera before we came to live in the area. Since then we have enjoyed both attending events and the splendid cafe In the foyer. It is a brilliant example of a local/regional community arts initiative and must not be allowed to falter.
