Mara Menzies - 'Blood & Gold'

Enter the world of Blood and Gold, and let performance storyteller, Mara Menzies take you on a journey of tragedy, wonder and magic.

Listen and watch as she explores African ancestry through tales ofslavery, cruelty and colonisation, unearthing pride, love and sacrifice along the way. Her book, Blood and Gold, explores the themes of loss and oppression, while asking us to examine our own identities, attitudes, and humanity.

An exquisite piece of storytelling’ – The Guardian

Mara Menzies is an award-winning artist whose dynamic, colourful style brings the ancient art form of performance storytelling to life. 'Blood and Gold' premiered at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in 2019 as part of the Made in Scotland showcase and was one of 5 shows nominated for the Filipa Braganca award for best emerging solo female performance. Mara was nominated for the Critics’ Awards for Theatre in Scotland in 2020, and has been invited to perform and share her stories in 27 countries.

I have enjoyed taking part in events such as Scots Opera before we came to live in the area. Since then we have enjoyed both attending events and the splendid cafe In the foyer. It is a brilliant example of a local/regional community arts initiative and must not be allowed to falter.

Happy to support this incredible venue which hosted our wedding 3 years ago now. Still the best day of our lives and the Birnam arts played a huge part in that!

Great exhibition and performance spaces. Lovely terrace and indoor seating with lots of light. Great food and drinks and even a garden next-door for a stroll afterwards. Like
