Join us at Birnam Arts for an artist talk by Karl Macrae, presented alongside our current exhibition, who will be remembered here by Lewis Hetherington & CJ Mahony.
While not directly connected to the exhibition, Karl's practice engages with related questions around identity, visibility, belonging, and personal narrative through contemporary mixed-media embroidery.
Karl Macrae is a queer, contemporary, design-led embroidery artist whose work pushes the boundaries of traditional techniques. Drawing on his own experiences and creative journey, Karl will discuss the development of his practice, the challenges of establishing a career in the arts, and the role creativity played in shaping his life.
Originally trained as a traditional folk musician, teacher and bingo caller, Karl lived with CPTSD and depression and found that creativity and sense of self had become deeply disconnected. Through artmaking, he has rebuilt both his practice and his confidence and now works full-time from his studio at Perth Creative Exchange.
Open to everyone, this talk offers an opportunity to gain insight into a working artist's practice, ask questions, and join the wider conversation about creativity, identity, and professional development in the arts.
Whether you're an artist, student, creative practitioner, or simply interested in contemporary art and culture, you're warmly invited to attend.
All welcome.
